Regatta!

We had no idea the weekend we picked to go to Venice just happened to be the popular Regatta weekend held once a year. The Regatta is a bunch of boat races between two, four, six, and eight men teams all rowing the entire Grand Canal. Prior to the races were the Parade of Boats! These were not the boats that were in the race, but were boats that held dignitaries from Venice, and they were all dressed in Mid Evil attire. It was beautiful! All the boats were decorated with everything from flags to food, from statues of dragons to winged angles! Brightly colored costumes offset the shiny boats. Everyone sitting along the shoreline cheered and clapped as the boats floated by, and we cheered and clapped along with them, happy to once again feel what it is like to live like an Italian.

Venezia by Night!

We only took a few pictures one night, but it was fun playing around with the low glowing lights, the reflections off the water, and the soft colors. The first picture was taken looking down one of the canals. The shutter needed to stay open for about 20 seconds to allow enough light to take the picture. The streak of light down the middle of the water is the result of the small light on the back of a slow moving boat. This picture was taken while we sat at our dinner table.

Only a small part of our dinner that night.............

The top of the church that is located at the end of the Piazza San Marco.

Part of Bacino San Marco.
Looking across a wide section of the Grand Canal. Te streaks of light across the bottom of the picture are the result of boats moving down the canal.
