Mom and Dad give Italy a whirl...........

My parents came for a two week visit at the end of September. It wasn't nearly long enough. You can't tell by looking at them, but they are both in their mid seventies, and not only climbed hundreds of steps every day, but managed to walk miles up and down hills. They also stayed up way past 9:00 P.M. and were real troopers to try any food Stacey ordered for them.....no matter how many heads, fins, and eyes it still had attached. They loved all the pasta and wines. And of course......the Gelato. But I think their favorite by far, was Umbria. We came here towards the end of the trip and I'm so glad we did.
I followed them around with my camera taking hundreds of pictures. My mom is very camera shy and finally gave in to me and just went with it. My dad took a ton of pictures on his own and had to keep buying film.
I am not only grateful to my husband for bringing my parents to Italy, but for my parents for coming. It took months of trying to convince them that they deserve a trip like this. My parents are always thinking of everyone else's needs and felt that this was money that should be spent on someone else. I think they finally gave in for me, but by the end of the trip were trying to figure out how they could come back.
For me, I will be able to remember seeing my parents holding hands walking through the streets of Rome, sitting on a bench looking out at the sea on the tiny island of Capri, walking through the Forum, standing inside the two thousand year old Pantheon looking up at the ceiling, kneeling in St Peter's Basilica, eating Gelato, sneaking into a vineyard for me to take their picture next to the rows of grapes......then eating them! Seeing them walk under a canopy of trees on a mossy path high on a hill above Assisi, sitting on a balcony looking across the sea at Mt Vesuvius, singing old Dean Martin songs with the guy at the pizza place, lighting candles in countless churches, watching them climb the Spanish Steps hand in hand, seeing them throwing coins into the Trevi Fountain, dressing up and going out to dinner at a Villa, sleeping in a Villa, going for a walk in Umbria with my Mom, and getting that extra long hug from my Dad on the church steps in Todi. So many more I can't list them. I will just let you see just a small portion of their days spent in Italy, starting off with my favorite picture of them that just happens to have been taken in my favorite hilltown of Assisi...........where else.........but in Umbria!
The Villa Zuccari where we stayed in Umbria. Mom and Dad's room was on the top floor second to the end on the right. They had a huge balcony.

The town of Assisi. The long building on the left side is St. Francis's Church. There is also a monestary that is home to over 4,000 monks. The next group of pictures are of things in Assisi.

On top of the mountain above Assis is a chapel where St. Francis use to come for quiet prayer. It is an amazing place. They have built a chapel around the tiny area where he would sleep.

Going to dinner at the Villa Pambuffetti. It is one of our favorite resturants in all of Italy!!!
Driving back to Rome, we stopped and walked into this vineyard. The grapes were only a day or two away from being picked.

The hilltown of Todi.................
